Things to Know Before You Get Botox

Alyssa Curet • June 1, 2026

If you’ve been thinking about Botox, you’re definitely not alone. Botox remains one of the most popular cosmetic treatments because it’s quick, effective, and requires little to no downtime. But before your first appointment, there are a few important things you should know to help set realistic expectations and ensure you get the best possible results.

At
Williamson Cosmetic Center, we believe education is just as important as treatment. Here are some of the most common things I discuss with patients before they begin Botox treatments.

Dose Matters — And It Affects Duration

One of the biggest misconceptions about Botox is that everyone receives the same amount. In reality, Botox dosing is highly individualized. The recommended dosage for each treatment area is based on clinical studies that show results typically lasting around 3–4 months. However, not everyone has the same muscle strength, facial movement, or anatomy. Using too little product may lead to results wearing off sooner than expected. A customized treatment plan helps ensure your Botox lasts appropriately while still looking natural and balanced.

Results Are Not Instant

Another important thing to know: Botox does not work immediately. Most patients begin noticing improvement within about 5–7 days after treatment, but full results typically take up to two weeks. This is completely normal and part of the process as the neurotoxin gradually relaxes the targeted muscles. Because of this timeline, I always recommend scheduling your appointment at least two weeks before a major event, wedding, vacation, or photo session.

Botox Results Are Temporary

Botox is not a permanent, maintenance-free wrinkle correction. Results generally last about 3–4 months, which means ongoing treatments are necessary to maintain your look. Over time, many patients notice that consistent treatments can help “train” certain muscles to contract less aggressively, which may soften lines long-term. Still, routine maintenance appointments are key if you want to keep results consistent year-round.

Botox Treats More Than Just Forehead Wrinkles Most people associate Botox with forehead lines, but we can treat many different areas of the face and neck. The FDA-approved treatment areas include:

● Forehead lines

● Glabellar lines (“11’s” between the brows)

● Crow’s feet

● Platysmal bands in the neck

In addition to those approved areas, Botox is also commonly used in several other areas to enhance facial balance and soften movement, including: ● Upper lip (“lip flip”)

● DAO muscles to soften downturned mouth corners

● Mentalis muscle to reduce chin dimpling

● Masseter muscles for facial slimming and jaw tension relief

These advanced treatment areas require careful assessment and experience to ensure natural-looking results.

Natural Results Should Always Be the Goal

One of the biggest fears patients have is looking “frozen” or overdone. Botox treatments are designed to soften movement — not erase all expression. A personalized approach allows us to maintain natural facial movement while still reducing wrinkles and preventing deeper lines from forming.

Your Consultation Matters

A proper consultation is one of the most important parts of your Botox journey. During your visit, we evaluate your facial anatomy, muscle movement, goals, and medical history to determine the safest and most effective treatment plan for you. Every face is different, and your treatment should be customized accordingly. If you’ve been considering Botox and want natural, refreshed results, our team at Williamson Cosmetic Center is here to help guide you through the process with education, expertise, and personalized care.
