KYBELLA®

The non-surgical solution for a Double Chin.

KYBELLA EXPERTS IN LOUISIANA

Kybella works by destroying fat cells where injected.

Kybella, known scientifically as deoxycholic acid, is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment specifically designed to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin, often referred to as a "double chin" or submental fullness. The active ingredient, synthetic deoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When a trained healthcare professional injects Kybella into the fat beneath the chin, it works by destroying the fat cells. Once these cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat, leading to a noticeable and permanent reduction in fullness, offering a non-surgical alternative to procedures like liposuction.

The Kybella procedure is typically performed in a brief, in-office session, usually lasting about 15 to 20 minutes. Patients often require a series of treatments, spaced at least one month apart, to achieve their desired aesthetic goals, with most patients needing between two and four sessions, and up to six possible. While Kybella effectively eliminates fat cells, ideal candidates are those with good skin elasticity, as the treatment targets fat but does not primarily address significant skin laxity. Patients looking for this non-invasive contouring often report feeling younger, thinner, and happier with their improved jawline profile once the treatment course is complete.

  • How many treatments do you need?

The level of treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Most patients need 12 to 20 injections per visit, for two to three visits. These visits will be spaced a month apart. Each treatment takes around 15 minutes.

  • How long do the results last?

When Kybella is injected under the chin, the fat cells are destroyed. Once destroyed, the cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. After the desired effect is achieved, further treatment with Kybella is not expected. Results are likely to last a lifetime!

  • Are there side effects?

As with all cosmetic procedures, there are risks and side effects associated with Kybella. The most common side effects include bruising, swelling, pain, numbness and small, hard areas around the injection sites. These side effects generally diminish over the healing process.

A possible serious side effect of Kybella is an injury to the nerve that helps control expressions, causing an uneven smile. This happens when shots are administered too close to this nerve. In trials of more than 5,000 people, this side effect happened in 4% of patients, and eventually went away in all of them.

  • What are the phases of the healing process?

Immediate Swelling (The Most Significant Effect): This is the most notable part of the downtime. Immediately following the injection, it is common to experience moderate to significant swelling in the treatment area. This swelling is a sign that the deoxycholic acid is actively destroying the fat cells and the body's natural inflammatory response has begun. The most intense swelling usually peaks within 24 to 72 hours after the treatment.

Mild to Moderate Discomfort: You may feel some tenderness, mild pain, or a sensation of firmness/hardness under the chin, which is normal and typically subsides within 1 to 2 weeks. Over-the-counter pain relievers and cold packs (applied according to your provider's instructions) can help manage this discomfort.

Bruising and Numbness: Bruising is common and can last up to 10 days. Numbness in the treated area is also typical due to the effect of the injection and can sometimes linger for several weeks, gradually resolving on its own.

Return to Normal Activity: Most patients can resume their normal daily activities, including work, almost immediately. However, due to the noticeable swelling, some people choose to take 1 to 3 days off social commitments. High-impact exercise is generally restricted for a few days to a week to avoid exacerbating swelling.
