Laser vein removal is a modern, minimally invasive treatment used to eliminate the appearance of unwanted veins, such as spider veins (tiny, web-like vessels) and varicose veins (larger, twisted, and bulging vessels). The procedure utilizes a concentrated beam of light, or laser energy, which is absorbed by the pigment in the blood within the targeted vein. This light energy converts to heat, causing the vein wall to be damaged, seal shut, and eventually collapse.Once sealed, the blood is naturally rerouted to healthier veins, and the treated vein is gradually absorbed by the body and fades from view over the following weeks or months.Depending on the size and location of the vein, the laser may be applied externally to the skin (simple laser treatment) or, for larger varicose veins, a thin fiber may be inserted directly into the vein (endovenous laser therapy or EVLT).

One of the most appealing aspects of modern laser vein removal is its minimally invasive nature. Unlike traditional vein stripping surgery, these laser treatments often require only a small incision (for EVLT) or no incision at all, leading to less pain, a significantly reduced risk of scarring, and fewer complications. The procedures are typically quick, often lasting less than an hour, and are performed in an outpatient setting, allowing patients to return to their normal activities almost immediately with little to no downtime.

Beyond the reduced recovery time, laser vein removal offers significant cosmetic and health benefits. Cosmetically, it leads to a smoother, clearer skin appearance, boosting self-confidence for those embarrassed by visible veins. From a health perspective, treating veins that cause symptoms can provide relief from associated discomfort, such as aching, heaviness, and swelling in the legs, and can help to prevent potential complications like blood clots or skin ulcers associated with untreated varicose veins. This effective and precise method allows for targeted treatment of the problematic vessels while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue.

  • Is the procedure painful?

The procedure is typically minimally uncomfortable. For Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), local anesthesia is injected along the length of the vein, which numbs the area and is often the only discomfort felt. Simple surface laser treatments may feel like a quick, hot snap or pinprick.

  • How long does the procedure take?

The session is generally quick, often lasting only 30 to 60 minutes per leg, depending on the extent of the veins being treated.

  • Do I need these veins?

Diagram of leg arteries (red) and veins (blue) labeled with anatomical terms.

No. The treated veins are superficial (close to the skin) and unhealthy. Once they are closed, the blood is naturally rerouted to the many larger, healthy veins (the deep venous system) in the leg.

  • How is the treatment performed?

For varicose veins, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the vein through a tiny puncture (EVLT). For small spider veins, the laser is applied directly to the skin's surface.

  • What is the recovery time?

Recovery is very quick. Most patients can walk immediately after the procedure and return to normal daily activities the next day.

  • What are the restrictions afterward?

Patients are encouraged to walk, but are advised to avoid strenuous exercise (running, heavy lifting, high-impact activities) and hot baths/saunas for one to two weeks. Prolonged sitting or standing should also be avoided.

  • Why do I have to wear compression stockings?

Compression stockings are vital. They help apply pressure to the treated veins, reduce swelling, improve blood circulation, and decrease the risk of blood clots, all of which contribute to the success of the treatment.

  • When will I see the results?

Results are gradual. Symptoms like aching and heaviness may improve within a few weeks. Visible veins may take several weeks to a few months to fully fade as the body naturally absorbs the closed vein.

  • How successful is the treatment?

Minimally invasive procedures like EVLT have a very high success rate, often quoted as 95–98% for permanently closing the treated vein.

  • Can new varicose veins form?

While the treated vein is permanently closed, laser treatment does not stop the underlying chronic disease process. New varicose or spider veins can develop over time due to factors like genetics, aging, and lifestyle, which may require follow-up or maintenance treatments.

  • Will there be scarring?

Scarring is minimal to non-existent. EVLT only requires a tiny puncture, and surface lasers leave no surgical scars. You may have temporary bruising and redness.
