Results that can last up to one full year.
Radiesse is an injectable dermal filler used primarily to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth). Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, Radiesse is composed of Calcium Hydroxylapatite ($\text{CaHA}$) microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier. This unique composition provides immediate volume and correction upon injection due to the gel matrix. However, the long-term benefit comes from the CaHA microspheres, which act as a scaffold that stimulates the body's natural process of collagenesis, or new collagen production, over time. This makes Radiesse a biostimulatory filler, offering both instant results and gradual, long-lasting improvements in skin structure and volume.
The initial volume provided by the gel carrier is gradually metabolized and absorbed by the body. As this happens, the CaHA particles remain and continue to encourage the growth of new collagen around them. This newly formed collagen network is what ultimately sustains the desired aesthetic correction, often lasting for a year or more, which is generally longer than many hyaluronic acid fillers. Beyond its use in facial volumization, Radiesse is also frequently employed for hand rejuvenation, as it can effectively restore volume to the backs of the hands, reducing the prominence of veins and tendons. The treatment is typically quick, often taking less than an hour, and while patients may experience temporary swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection site, downtime is minimal.
A key benefit of Radiesse is its versatility and high viscosity, which makes it particularly effective for areas requiring significant structural support and lift. It is often chosen for deeper lines, cheek contouring, and jawline definition. Because the results rely on natural collagen production, the improvements appear soft and natural. A qualified, licensed practitioner should perform the procedure, as proper injection technique is crucial for achieving optimal, smooth results and ensuring patient safety. Patients considering Radiesse should consult with their provider to determine if it is the appropriate treatment for their specific aesthetic goals and skin condition.
What is Radiesse?
Schedule a Consult NowIt is made of calcium hydroxyapatite which is an organic substance similar to bone. Radiesse promotes the body’s own tissue growth thereby adding volume to the treated area. No animals or animal products are used to produce it and no skin test is required.
How is Radiesse administered?
A small needle is used to implant Radiesse into the desired area. Topical and/or local anesthesia can be used to minimize discomfort.
How quickly will I see results?
Immediate volume and lift are visible right after the injection due to the gel carrier. The full, long-lasting results from new collagen production develop gradually over the following weeks and months.
What are the side effects?
Tenderness, redness, bruising, swelling or bumps at the injection site are common. These are temporary, if at all.
Is Radiesse permanent?
No, the results are not permanent.4 The Calcium Hydroxylapatite (5$\text{CaHA}$) microspheres and the gel carrier are safely and naturally broken down and absorbed by your body over time.6 However, the new collagen your body produces may provide continued, though diminishing, support.
What is the downtime or recovery like?
Downtime is minimal. Most people can resume their normal daily activities immediately. You may experience common injection-related side effects such as mild swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection sites, which usually resolve within a few days to a week.
Can Radiesse be dissolved or reversed?
Unlike HA fillers, Radiesse cannot be dissolved with an enzyme like hyaluronidase. This is an important consideration; however, due to its composition and biostimulatory nature, severe irregularities are rare with proper technique.
