As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and fat begins to congregate in areas where we don’t want it. One common example of this is fat developing in the submental area, known as a ”double chin”. There are a few treatments that can help reduce this common occurrence, one of them being the newly FDA-approved treatment Kybella.
Kybella works by destroying fat cells where injected. When injected into the submental area, Kybella gets rid of the fat cells causing the “double chin” look. Kybella produces similar results to liposuction or surgery while being less invasive.
How many treatments do you need?
The level of treatment depends on the severity of the condition. Most patients need 12 to 20 injections per visit, for two to three visits. These visits will be spaced a month apart. Each treatment takes around 15 minutes.
How long do the results last?
When Kybella is injected under the chin, the fat cells are destroyed. Once destroyed, the cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. After the desired effect is achieved, further treatment with Kybella is not expected. Results are likely to last a lifetime!
Are there side effects?
As with all cosmetic procedures, there are risks and side effects associated with Kybella. The most common side effects include bruising, swelling, pain, numbness and small, hard areas around the injection sites. These side effects generally diminish over the healing process.
A possible serious side effect of Kybella is an injury to the nerve that helps control expressions, causing an uneven smile. This happens when shots are administered too close to this nerve. In trials of more than 5,000 people, this side effect happened in 4% of patients, and eventually went away in all of them.
