WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction, sometimes called lipoplasty is a minimally invasive body-sculpting treatment to remove lingering fat that is unyielding to weight loss efforts. Liposuction is not a replacement for proper exercise and diet. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure but rather one to remove areas of unwanted fat resulting in a smoother silhouette. Used in combination with several areas of the body, liposuction can provide a well-proportioned body appearance. Ideal surgical candidates are those already in good physical condition but having stubborn areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. It is best for reasonably fit individuals who simply want to sculpt and add definition to their bodies.

HOW DOES LIPOSUCTION WORK?

Liposuction or lipoplasty is performed at our Cosmetic Center in Baton Rouge under general anesthesia where our patients asleep or under local anesthesia. The surgeon creates a tiny incision and inserts a narrow tube and vacuums out the fatty tissue beneath the skin. Williamson Cosmetic Center specialists determine the correct amount of fat to be removed by manipulating the skin and tissue. After removing the excess fat, the incisions are closed with a compression bandage to the area to prevent bleeding and decrease swelling.

There a few different types of liposuction procedures:

  • Tumescent liposuction

    – This is the most commonly performed type of liposuction. A sterile solution to assist with fat removal, comprised of salt water along with lidocaine, a pain reliever and epinephrine to constrict the blood vessels is injected into the area being treated. Our surgeon then makes a small incisions to insert the thin tube, called a cannula, to vacuum out the fat and fluids from the body.

  • Powered liposuction

    – This type of liposuction uses a cannula that moves in swift motions to break down fat cells. These tiny vibrations allow surgeons to eradicate tough fat more easily. This type of treatment may cause less pain with increased precision.

These treatments have been developed as a result of recent advancements in new technologies. Together at Williamson Cosmetic Center, the patient and the surgeon can discuss which methods are best during the initial consultation visit.

Liposuction at our Baton Rouge offices can last as little as thirty minutes up to several hours depending upon patient needs.

WHAT ABOUT RECOVERY?

Liposuction is surgery. Pain and discomfort should be expected. Medication is prescribed to help alleviate pain, and patients are often instructed to wear post-surgical garments or bandages to help hold the area firm while it heals. Many patients experience fluid drainage and may have a tube inserted to allow this process for the first few days of recovery. Some bleeding should be expected as well as swelling and temporary numbness. After a week most patients begin to return to normal as far as their physical strength and health are concerned. Return to work depends on the patient’s occupation but generally takes a few days.
